Happy December! During this month, we celebrate the Advent season in preparation for the Christmas season, which begins with the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord on December 25th. The month is also dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and includes several important feast days.
Major Celebrations and Seasons
Advent (Early to Late December): This is the liturgical season of preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. The first portion of December falls during Advent, a time of hopeful expectation, penance, and reflection.
The Immaculate Conception (December 8): This is a solemnity and a Holy Day of Obligation in the United States. It celebrates the doctrine that the Virgin Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception in anticipation of her role as the Mother of God.
Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12): This feast day is a major celebration, particularly important in North and South America, honoring the Virgin Mary's appearance to St. Juan Diego in Mexico.
Christmas / The Nativity of the Lord (December 25): The central celebration of the month and a Holy Day of Obligation, this solemnity marks the birth of Jesus Christ. It begins the Christmas season, which continues for several days.
Christmas Octave (December 25 - January 1): The celebration of Christmas is extended for eight days (an octave), with specific feasts on each day, including the Feast of St. Stephen (December 26), St. John the Apostle (December 27), and the Holy Innocents (December 28).
The Holy Family: This feast is celebrated on the Sunday within the Christmas Octave (or December 30 if there is no Sunday).
I am a 42 year old husband to April, daddy to Gavin & Jonah, brother to Sammy, and son to Roberto & Vicky.
